I love what I do.

It’s not a “this job has great hours and great pay” kind of job. It’s an honest to goodness “love” of what I do. I have had other jobs that I liked, jobs that I enjoyed doing. However never have I had a ob that I totally loved.

I did my first reference interview the other day. At the Library where I am interning a student needed help finding information. The reference desk isn’t usually staffed so I was in the stacks for some reason. a circulation clerk sent the patron to me and I was able to help him. When I was done I went back to the Circulation desk and the staff all asked why I was happy. It was because I actually got to do what I have been going to school to do, what I have been training to do, what I have been hoping to do.

I love being a Librarian so much I was excited to realize that PLA was the week between breaks in school. Normal people wouldn’t plan on spending their vacation at a professional conference. Not me. As soon as I realized it fit into my schedule perfectly I registered and made all the arrangements. (I’ll also be at ALA Annual in DC in June, so if anyone wants to meet up at either of these events let me know!)

I can’t recall where I heard this, but someone said that there are two types of Librarians. The ones who think its a job and the ones who are professionals. That is to say there are the 9 to 5 5 day a week Librarians and there are those who are Librarians all the time. I am the latter. In fact I can’t watch something on TV without looking something up, even if its a word that was used. My family laughs about it but its how I am. It is who I am.

Some people live there whole lives going to a job they don’t like but do it because maybe they are good at it, or maybe it pays well. I am blessed to know what it is I love. I don’t wake up dreading going to the Library, I wake up excited to see who I’ll meet, what Books I’ll discover or what answers I’ll help to provide. I love being a Librarian.
